Spicy Cauliflower Deliciousness

This is not my recipe....seriously, it's not. One of my friends found it here: http://amazingpinterestworld.blogspot.com/2012/11/spicy-buffalo-cauliflower.html Then she shared it with me at a holiday gathering recently.

Holy Cauliflower, Batman! Bang! Zap! Pow! Amazingness!

Ingredients
  • 1 head cauliflower
  • For the batter:
  • Dash of Frank’s Original Hot Sauce, or whatever kind you like
  • ½ c. white rice flour
  • ½ c. water
  • Pinch salt

  • For the Buffalo sauce:
  • ¼ c. Frank’s Hot Sauce
  • ¼ c. oil, canola oil works best
  • Pinch salt
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix together the batter ingredients in a small bowl. Dip the cauliflower in the batter until coated evenly then place on greased baking sheet. Bake for about 15 minutes or until the batter hardens.
  2. Mix together sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Once the cauliflower are done baking, brush them with the hot sauce mixture and bake again for a few more minutes, until cauliflower is crispy.
  3. Remove from oven. You may want to add a bit more buffalo sauce to taste.
  4. Enjoy!

Lush T'eo: A Review

Find the product here..

Your Rating: 5 stars
Headline: Love it!

Pros : Long-Lasting, Hypo-Allergenic, Doesn't get on clothes, Great Smell, Good Protection
Cons : Messy
Best Uses : Daily Use
Describe Yourself : Natural, Perspire Easily, Faculty
When you survey your stash, you label this product : Guilty Pleasure

I use this product daily. I walk a great deal around a college campus during the daytime, so I need something that lasts all day, and T'eo does the trick!

A couple of things I really love about T'eo:
*I love that the powder does NOT appear on my black tube top when I wear it!
*I love that I can apply once daily without having to refresh!
*I love that it feels much more natural than the other  deodorant I was using before!

A tip or two:
*Buy the tin to hold it--I didn't, and I'm regretting it, as there's a white, powdery residue on my dresser now (it wipes off, obviously, but it looks like a mess until I take a rag to the dresser). :(
*If you shave, wait about 10-15 minutes before applying T'eo, otherwise it might sting just a bit (I'm super sensitive to pain, and it only slightly bothers me if I apply immediately after shaving).

As a spend thrift, buying T'eo felt like a guilty pleasure...I never imagined myself paying $8 for deodorant, but (a friend talked me into it and) it's totally worth it. I am guessing for as little as I use daily, this brick will last me at least 3 months, which in comparison to other  deodorants, might even save me a bit of money!

Plus, I feel like I'm being a bit more green by not buying a plastic encased deodorant container!

:)

On being an ally

I have always considered myself to be a LGBT ally. I think my story starts with my mother. My mother is not always open about everything, but when I was a kid, she always had LGBT friends. I remember two of those friends most vividly: Pat (or Booboo) and Erica (or Steve).

Pat was a lesbian and was my mother's closest friend when I was a kid. She was always around, always bring over her girlfriends, always talking about women, and always fun! She was maybe my favorite person ever. I always knew that I could be myself around her, and I always felt loved by her. She might've gotten into a bit of trouble as the years went on--drugs and other things--but she was such a powerful force in my ally-ness.

Erica--well, Erica was a drag queen. I don't recall ever seeing Erica out of costume. I do recall seeing Erica perform several times during my youth. But, I don't remember much else.

And, of course, there's my mother. She's heterosexual, as far as I know. And, sometimes she's a little bit racists. And, frankly, sometimes she says things that I read as homophobic as well, but I don't think that she thinks those comments are homophobic. For instance, she'll refer to someone she sees as a "faggot." I don't particularly care for this word, but my mother is in her 50s, so it's a word that's embedded in her language. Even though she knows the negative connotation behind that word--oh, I've told her--she still says it.

I don't think that my mother ever officially said anything like, "love everybody" or "be an ally." Instead, I think she showed me that I should look for the good in people and that it's okay to be open to diversity.

So, what does being an ally mean to me? How can I be an ally?

Well, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation--GLAD is different) says there are 10 ways to be an ally & a friend. Some of those are:
*be a listener
*be open-minded
*be willing to talk
*be inclusive and invite LGBT friends to hang out with your friends and family.
*don't assume that all your friends and co-workers are straight.
*homophobic comments and jokes are harmful. let your friends, family and co-workers know that you find them offensive.
*confront your own prejudices and homophobia
*defend your LGBT friends against discrimination
*believe that all people, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, should be treated with dignity and respect

Some of the other things that I think are important about being a straight ally are:
*to stay informed--read, listen to radio shows and podcasts, ask a member of the LGBT community
*support equality

This one is hard to iterate...but I want to make sure I'm always being the best ally I can be and that I'm always being reflexive about my heterosexual privilege.

On life and death

Lately, there's been a lot of loss...a lot. Too much, in fact.

But, with loss comes thought. Among my thoughts are memories recalled. Many are happy. No doubt some are less than happy. Many require that I fill in the gaps of memories. Also among my thoughts are preparations for my own life and death. Live happy. Live free. Live love. Live life. Die happy. Die free. And, preparations....after life and death.  Cremation or burial: cremation. Resting spot: wherever. Some of my happy places are: the resting place near Bonham where John and Elton (my grandfathers) are buried, Starview winery, my grandparents' old house on Hwy 82 in Bonham (across from the railroad tracks and, now, a prison), the adobe house in Lake Worth where we met Gary and adopted him into our little family, Springtown (just Springtown generally...I was happy there)....so many happy places, but ya have to be careful disposing of remains in public places!

*sigh* too much loss. too much.

November Pictures

In the Fall 2011, SIUC faculty went on strike...this was one of the cartoons hanging around campus that made me giggle and contemplate.

We've barely had the new Subaru 6 months, and already 9000 miles! yikes! Must be all those trips we took over the summer!

The best vegan cheese spread I've tasted to date! I made nachos and nachos and more nachos, and then I couldn't find it at my local Whole Foods. This package I found at the St Louis Whole Foods. Yum!

We headed to a conference in New Orleans in November, and our hotel room (at the beautiful Chateau Bourbon) overlooked Bourbon Street....this is the daytime shot! Fun times for sure!

Pictures from August...

I'm obviously behind, but here're a few of the pictures I took during the month of August. Enjoy!
Moving from Illinois to West Virginia--Dr.Blueberry drive the Budget truck, and I drove his car behind him the whole way...boring!

And, yet, when we arrived in WV, this is what we found---beautiful! The bottom half of the house in the back is built into the mountain, and the front yard is short (picture below) with a mountain on the other side of the road.

A (non-vegan) chocolate eclair, not eaten by me, but by my friend Satoshi. Doesn't it look delish!?

I stayed at a friend's place for a couple of weeks, and the day I mowed the lawn, I looked out and saw this adorable little friend hanging out. He clearly liked the smell of fresh grass also!

Next to the Recycling Center in town...I was only slightly freaked out, for just a brief moment!

As I cleaned my office in Carbondale, I came across this little gem. My colleague Chris had drawn it out during the Fall 2010 semester as part of a conversation about ethical eating. I love this picture so much!

A picture perfect tree on the Davis and Elkins College campus.

Dr.Blueberry's new office is on the third floor, maybe the 4th or 5th window from left...

Isn't the Davis and Elkins College campus gorgeous?! Such character!

A beverage in town was necessary on this day....this Yuengling was delightful!

Oh, Southern Illinois Wine Trail...you never fail us! Hickory Ridge probably has the best of the wines...seriously!

FB Drama with Phone Contacts...

I posted the following note to my FB account today, and I thought I'd share it here...

and, here...

Because I keep seeing the "warnings" about phone contacts on FB, I've done a bit of reading and looking around. I'd like to say, and pay attention here, that the only phone numbers that I can see on that "Account->Edit Friends->Contacts" list are those of you who have also posted your numbers (to be exact, neither my mother's nor my mother-in-law's numbers are available on this page).

Now, this isn't to say that some of you _might_ be able to see contact information for some of your friends/family members who are not on FB--who am I to disagree with what you've seen with your own eyes?! To the contrary...I totally believe you, but I think, generally, this is your own doing: perhaps you have a "smart phone" with which you check FB, and your settings need to be adjusted (this is a natural progression given how fast the technology is "improving"); perhaps it _is_ in the privacy settings on your FB account (to be honest, even I do not read every little clause on FB); perhaps it's some other issue that hasn't yet arisen.

What I'm not convinced of is that this is some conspiracy by FB to access your contacts---I mean, what are they going to do, call my momma?! What I really think is happening is quite simple: I think there's a FB "scare" going around that has us (the general public) looking for a reason to switch to Goggle+. Ok, that might be a bit extreme, yes, but I don't think there's any reason at all to get all in an uproar about this phone book issue. Just fix it if it bothers you...

*drama*

Some thoughts...about Taos Pueblo

Dr.Blueberry and I are in Taos, NM for a conference this week, and tomorrow (which also happens to be my birthday), we're headed down to the Pueblo Reservation. We're going as a group with other conference-goers, and some of them are a little fussy about not being able to take pictures (it's a visual communication conference, so they are all about the visual imagery).

They're upset about pictures, while I'm struggling with the idea of going to look at people, as though they are caged (like animals in a zoo, for instance) and there for my viewing pleasure.

I'm feeling a bit dramatic about these feelings, and my dearest friend suggest I might blog about it, rather she suggested I might make some notes about how I'm feeling and make some sort of research project out of the experience. It's a really great idea, but honestly, I don't know how I feel about that either. So I'll start with the blog for now, and see where it goes.

About the picture taking: The Pueblos are saying that because we're academics who study visual imagery, we're professionals, which means instead of the $6 camera fee, the fee is around $300. And, the $6 camera fee is only for amateur photos that will be used only for personal use--no academic use, no publication, no reproduction, etc. allowed. This leads me to the conclusion that I cannot take a camera at all. I am by no means a professional photographer; some of the conference attendees clearly are. But, I blog, I post the pictures I take, I sometimes use them for academic purposes, etc. etc. So, the decision is easy: Remove the temptation to use photographs by not taking photographs. And, we can buy postcards with pueblo images at the reservation. Yes, they might cost a bit more money than if I took it myself, but given that selling "things" is a way for the Native American nation to make money, I'm ok with that!

It's the spectacle that concerns me most: the event, the scheme, the image that is regarded only for its impact. Spectacle, academically, is associated with Aristotle's tragedy. I wonder about the tragedy of Native Americans, who had their lands taken from them by white folks....I ponder the tragedy of living off the land that was theirs, was not theirs, and is now theirs again, but only by paying taxes to a government that barely recognizes them as natives to this country, let alone as human. And, then I think about the tragedy that the only reason the Pueblo Indians invite us (spectators) onto their reservation is because they need to make money to pay the government (there is a charge, after all, to visit the reservation).

This post will not be the end of this conversation...I'm really struggling with this issue.

365: Some pictures from this week...

Though not all. Prelims are due tomorrow, and then vacay (Taos, NM). So, lots of pictures next Sunday! :)

My view for the recent several weeks!

My anniversary gift to Dr.Blueberry. Scherrensnitte. (german paper cutting, framed)

I went to the post this week to get stamps to mail bills. The postal worker asked me what stamps I wanted. I replied, "Meh, just give me something noone else wants...I just stick them on bills anyways." She turned to the page of Ronnie stamps, and said..."Are you sure...?" I laughed and laughed and laughed!

Recipe Thursday: Vanilla (Lemon) Cake

From How it all Vegan.

If you're eating a vegan diet and haven't ventured out to buy the three How it all... books, just do it! The recipes are super simple, the author/s offer lots of sweet little tips to help with conversion, and the recipes are delicious!

I made this little gem for the first time last week to celebrate Dr.Blueberry's and my one-year anniversary.

It was pretty darned amazing! It was, like so many vegan cakes I've made over the years, a bit dense, but the flavor was fab, and I made a last minute conversion from "Vanilla" to "Lemon" Cake. Today as I look at the cookbook, I notice a Lemon Cake recipe directly below it...I admit that I totally missed it when I made the cake last week. I told Dr.B that I was taking a bit of a gamble and adding lemon extract instead of vanilla...oh, how I do love experiments. And, it was perfect! Here's the recipe!

Vanilla Cake, p. 147.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 c flour
2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
3/4 c dry sweetener (I used regular sugar)
3/4 c soy milk
2 t vanilla extract (I used lemon)
1/4 c oil (I used canola)
egg replacer to equal 1 egg (I used Ener-G egg replacer)

Preheat oven to 350F. In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add sweetener, milk, vanilla, oil, and egg replacer and mix (I used a whisk) together gentle until "just mixed." Pour into a lightly oiled (I use Bakers Joy spray) cake pan (I used a 9" round) and bake for 25-35 (I did 20, and it was perfect) minutes. Check with a knife (toothpick) to see if done. When cooled, ice and serve....

As always, I modified and added my commentary to the directions... I topped with a vegan-ized (read: sub vegan butter and soy milk) buttercream frosting (next week's recipe? perhaps!) and instead of vanilla extract again used lemon. We also topped our cakes with fresh sliced strawberries when serving!!

Such a yummy treat!

365 Pictures: Happy Anniversary!

That's right...this week in pictures, reminders of a year ago today--the day Mr.Blueberry and I got hitched.
For our anniversary, I baked a lemon cake and lemon buttercream frosting (all vegan, of course), and it turned out GREAT. We've been slicing fresh strawberries to top it with. I'll definitely be sharing this recipe!

Sunday Funday

Ok, not really...still writing prelims, so there's not much fun happening these days. This week, though, we went bowling, survived not one but TWO nasty storms, had a beautiful rainbow to enjoy, and wrote, wrote, wrote.
Pictures follow...

adorable bowling shoes

credit for the following rainbow pictures go to Toni Foy, who actually took the time to use a REAL camera, instead of her cell phone camera, which is why I did not get as nice a shot, lol! Thanks, Toni for letting me borrow these pics!

this one...is taken by me. see what I mean!

My adorable friend Molly, holding one of the gifts my adorable friend Scott sent to me to help with Prelims stuff! Look at all that static!

This little pro-life baby is getting me through the writing process. Ok, not really, but I do like this picture. I move the baby pretty much everyday to a new spot, and when I glance up and see it, it makes me giggle...it reinvigorates me! Yay for writing!!
