November Pictures

In the Fall 2011, SIUC faculty went on strike...this was one of the cartoons hanging around campus that made me giggle and contemplate.

We've barely had the new Subaru 6 months, and already 9000 miles! yikes! Must be all those trips we took over the summer!

The best vegan cheese spread I've tasted to date! I made nachos and nachos and more nachos, and then I couldn't find it at my local Whole Foods. This package I found at the St Louis Whole Foods. Yum!

We headed to a conference in New Orleans in November, and our hotel room (at the beautiful Chateau Bourbon) overlooked Bourbon Street....this is the daytime shot! Fun times for sure!

October Pictures

I've been really behind on posts, but here're a few pictures with descriptions!

Orphan Annie Eyes

To Lay Brick

In St Louis, on the Delmar Loop, I found my thrills!

This reminds me of Wellington....Andy will understand!

When I was in Chicago in October, my cousin (pictures below) and I went on a boat tour of Chicago Architecture....this was one of the amazing views!

My handsome and super-sweet cousin.

My cousin's cat, Daisy, usually avoids me like I've got the plague, but on this trip, she was even sleeping on my lap! So sweet...makes me miss Sammie and want another kitty.

At the Hotel Orrington in Evanston, IL. Seriously awesome and easily accessible vegan food in Evanston, and the hotel was beautiful!

It doesn't look like much in this photo, but compare the width to that of the two car driveway at left...yeah...that's how many leaves Dr.Blueberry and I (mostly I) raked out of this huge yard! Wowza!

Our dryer went kapooie, but this nice man came by and fixed it for the perfect price.....it was a bit scary watching him take it apart and to see the burnt wire that was the problem--can we say house fire fear!?

On a very short hike in WV, I hurt my foot pretty badly...this is me keeping my leg iced and propped up!

O'Fallon Pumpkin Beer...need I say more?

A Match Meat burger at The Royale in St Louis, with sweet potato chips. Yum!

Lemon pepper tofu, cous cous, and spinach! Yum!

Pictures from August...

I'm obviously behind, but here're a few of the pictures I took during the month of August. Enjoy!
Moving from Illinois to West Virginia--Dr.Blueberry drive the Budget truck, and I drove his car behind him the whole way...boring!

And, yet, when we arrived in WV, this is what we found---beautiful! The bottom half of the house in the back is built into the mountain, and the front yard is short (picture below) with a mountain on the other side of the road.

A (non-vegan) chocolate eclair, not eaten by me, but by my friend Satoshi. Doesn't it look delish!?

I stayed at a friend's place for a couple of weeks, and the day I mowed the lawn, I looked out and saw this adorable little friend hanging out. He clearly liked the smell of fresh grass also!

Next to the Recycling Center in town...I was only slightly freaked out, for just a brief moment!

As I cleaned my office in Carbondale, I came across this little gem. My colleague Chris had drawn it out during the Fall 2010 semester as part of a conversation about ethical eating. I love this picture so much!

A picture perfect tree on the Davis and Elkins College campus.

Dr.Blueberry's new office is on the third floor, maybe the 4th or 5th window from left...

Isn't the Davis and Elkins College campus gorgeous?! Such character!

A beverage in town was necessary on this day....this Yuengling was delightful!

Tasty Restaurant/Recipe Thursday!

Here's an edit to my Thursday Recipe blogging idea... Dr.Blueberry and I eat out pretty regularly and travel really regularly, and since I talk a little bit about vegan food and dining options here, I think it's time I added a new "regular" topic: Restaurant Thursday or Recipe Thursday. This idea kinda arrived after our recent road travels, when I noticed that HappyCow has such strict guidelines about what gets added to their site--a practice that I do not intend to critique, as I recognize the value of the rules they set forth for adding restaurants.

Here's what happened...Dr.Blueberry and I were traveling through Springfield, MO last week, and there were only three dining options available to us. I called all three, and only two of them were open that day; and to make matters worse, the person I spoke with at each location, said, "Well, we have this one vegan option, and some salads that could be made vegan," a sentiment which always frustrates me. So, I decided instead to use the UrbanSpoon (currently linked to St Louis in my computer, since it's the closest big city) website to find a Thai-style restaurant to sit down at---I mean, Thai food=delicious tofu + fresh sauteed veggies + tasty, tasty seasoning and herbs...YUM! And, we happened upon a pretty good spot (Tasia). While we were sitting there, Dr.Blueberry said, "We should start contributing to [those websites]," and so I snapped pictures of the menu, the room, and one of our plates... (pictures and review forthcoming next week).

And, that's the beginning of this bloggers idea...I can't take all the "cred"--Dr.Blueberry is the creative mastermind!

:)

Oh, and where did we eat? Tasia in Springfield, MO... Here are the menus and pictures of some of the food!

365 Pictures: New Mexico Vacay!

Here's a good two-weeks worth of pictures. On this trip, Dr.Blueberry and I went to Taos, Taos Ski Valley, Albuquerque, and Roswell in New Mexico. Then we drove through Big Spring, TX to visit a college friend, and then we headed home to Carbondale, IL... Some of the photos below are labeled!

Recipe Thursday: A Rare Find...Pizza!

When Dr.Blueberry and I were in Taos last week, we went to Taos Pizza Out Back for dinner one night. What a find... So, this week I will not share a recipe, instead I'll share this rare find! If you're ever in Taos, please check it out.

Here's the thing that makes this place amazing...the crust and the soy cheese. Ok, so I have to admit that since becoming a vegetarian and since becoming a vegan, I've never had pizza as good as this. The crust was thick, the veggies (We had the Pizza Primavera without the feta and mozza, add soy cheese). We ordered a large, which usually is not a problem for us to put down... We each had two pieces and had to box it up to bring back to the lodge we're staying at. Seriously, it's so thick and delicious, make sure you have a fridge you can put the leftover deliciousness in when you leave the Out Back!

Here's the pizza we ordered...

Hope you can make it there someday to enjoy this find!

Some thoughts...about Taos Pueblo

Dr.Blueberry and I are in Taos, NM for a conference this week, and tomorrow (which also happens to be my birthday), we're headed down to the Pueblo Reservation. We're going as a group with other conference-goers, and some of them are a little fussy about not being able to take pictures (it's a visual communication conference, so they are all about the visual imagery).

They're upset about pictures, while I'm struggling with the idea of going to look at people, as though they are caged (like animals in a zoo, for instance) and there for my viewing pleasure.

I'm feeling a bit dramatic about these feelings, and my dearest friend suggest I might blog about it, rather she suggested I might make some notes about how I'm feeling and make some sort of research project out of the experience. It's a really great idea, but honestly, I don't know how I feel about that either. So I'll start with the blog for now, and see where it goes.

About the picture taking: The Pueblos are saying that because we're academics who study visual imagery, we're professionals, which means instead of the $6 camera fee, the fee is around $300. And, the $6 camera fee is only for amateur photos that will be used only for personal use--no academic use, no publication, no reproduction, etc. allowed. This leads me to the conclusion that I cannot take a camera at all. I am by no means a professional photographer; some of the conference attendees clearly are. But, I blog, I post the pictures I take, I sometimes use them for academic purposes, etc. etc. So, the decision is easy: Remove the temptation to use photographs by not taking photographs. And, we can buy postcards with pueblo images at the reservation. Yes, they might cost a bit more money than if I took it myself, but given that selling "things" is a way for the Native American nation to make money, I'm ok with that!

It's the spectacle that concerns me most: the event, the scheme, the image that is regarded only for its impact. Spectacle, academically, is associated with Aristotle's tragedy. I wonder about the tragedy of Native Americans, who had their lands taken from them by white folks....I ponder the tragedy of living off the land that was theirs, was not theirs, and is now theirs again, but only by paying taxes to a government that barely recognizes them as natives to this country, let alone as human. And, then I think about the tragedy that the only reason the Pueblo Indians invite us (spectators) onto their reservation is because they need to make money to pay the government (there is a charge, after all, to visit the reservation).

This post will not be the end of this conversation...I'm really struggling with this issue.
